Tragically Beautiful: A Graffiti Hearts Stand-Alone Novel Book 2 by Tori Alvarez

Description…..

Alex Martinez is not looking for love, not believing he knows how. He believed his station in life was determined by his birth into poverty. Proud and powerful in his neighborhood, he knows who he is and where he stands.

Until Lola walks into his life.

With her piercing blue eyes and bright personality, Alex can’t help falling for her. But she is his cousin’s best friend and out of his league. They come from different worlds, and Alex knows Lola deserves more than his broken past.

Tired of the shallow sorority friends and the lifestyle she once led, Lola is looking for deeper, more meaningful connections. She thought she’d found this in her new best friend, Toni. Then, she meets Alex, Toni’s cousin, and Lola finds herself drawn to Alex and his fierce loyalty and protectiveness toward his family. But she also sees the softer, more vulnerable side of Alex.

Just as their relationship begins, the past comes sneaking back in and threatens to drive a deeper wedge between them. Can their relationship withstand Alex’s past becoming his present?

This is Book Two of the Graffiti Hearts Stand- Alone Series. You can read them alone or enjoy them in order. The characters are interconnected.

My Review…..

It’s a love on the wrong side of the tracks for me. Young rich white girl falls for the wrong boy. Sound familiar? And that’s what I thought. Until I opened the book….. Yes it’s the same format, but how you put it together makes all the difference. And this one was put together really well.

Lola is your typical all American girl, popular, good grades type. But she’s not into all that, she wants a best friend she just be herself with, and she has that in Toni. Toni also has a great family, they always make her feel welcome.

Alex is a hard working young man, cares deeply for his siblings, but he knows he won’t ever amount to much. Working long hours to keep his family together, he doesn’t have time or the need for a girlfriend.

Alex knows he can’t have Lola, she’s too good for him, he’d only drag her down into the sorry state that is his life! Being his cousin’s best friend only makes it harder, he sees her every day. He needs to get rid of her!! Lola has had a crush on Alex forever. She’d love to be his, but knows that’s not possible. But it doesn’t stop the heart wanting what it shouldn’t have!!

But the attraction is there on both sides, and Alex finally admits to Lola that he likes her…. They agree to see where this will take them…. But true love never runs smooth!!

And when Alex’s past comes crashing back into his life! He does the only thing he does best, protect the ones he loves! Pushing away his family and Lola is the only course Alex has, breaking her heart will mean breaking his, but he can’t have Lola dragged down with him!

This book was just heartbreaking, it pulls all types of emotions out from you, like a good book should. Reading both sides of this book was great, seeing both sides of the story has always been a favourite read of mine (who wants a one dimensional story?) All the nuances are captured with care, and attention to detail is what makes this a book I’ll return to time and time again.

Will I go back and read the first one? I think I probably will at some point, then it will give me an excuse to revisit this beautifully written book.
