AUTHOR BIO

Charmaine Pauls was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She obtained a degree in Communication at the University of Potchestroom, and followed a diverse career path in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications, photography, graphic design, and brand marketing. Her writing has always been an integral part of her professions.

After relocating to Chile with her French husband, she fulfilled her passion to write creatively full-time. Charmaine has published over twenty novels since 2011, as well as several short stories and articles. Two of her shorts have been selected by the International Literary Society for an anthology from across the African continent.

When she is not writing, she likes to travel, read, and rescue cats. Charmaine currently lives in France with her husband and children. Their household is a linguistic mélange of Afrikaans, English, French and Spanish.

His voice lowers with intent. “Know this, if you do run, I’ll slap a pair of ankle cuffs on you so fast you won’t have time to say my name. There’ll be no more playing nice. I’ll tie you to my bed if that’s what I have to do.” Cupping my jaw, he delivers the threat with a soft kiss on my lips. “The choice is yours.”
The heavy blow is dealt with tender words. They sift down like snowflakes to settle cold in my heart. I tremble as he pushes me down onto the hood and leans over me.
“What will it be, Cas?”

My Review

This story starts where the first book finishes, so you’ll definitely need to read the first book to keep up.

Ian has no choice but to kidnap Cas, well that’s what he tells himself. But I don’t think he could ever really walk away from her. He obsessed, fascinated and totally into her.

Cas wakes to find her ensconced in Ian’s home! Escape for the moment looks unlikely, but Cas isn’t going to just accept her fate! She might be on the run from the police, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to accept being a “guest” as Ian’s “request”!

Ruben doesn’t like her (he’s part of Ian’s gang and friend) and she’s not sure if he won’t just put a bullet in her! I have to admit out of all the characters in this book, I like him the least! And I was hoping a lion might maul him!!

His brother Leon isn’t sure of her, I think he’s jealous that someone is taking his time away! It’s been just the three of them for a long time, and Ian has never shown that much interest in long term before.

I think both Leon and Ruben are worried Cas could make Ian give up his life with them!

This story just keeps getting better. The jump from hero to villain with Ian keeps you on your toes. You get to listen to more of his history, and you can see why he is the way he is. It doesn’t excuse him, but you understand him more. You also cheer as Cas won’t go down without a fight!

A fast paced story that keeps the twists and turns coming. We get a few new characters that are definitely key to the plot. Detective Wolfe is hot on their trail, and a few surprises keep you reading. Betrayal is ongoing, secrets keep cropping up. The hits keep coming….. The dual points of view is one of my favourites. I like to know what both characters are thinking and feeling.

Cliffhanger? Yes, and it’s a shocker!
