EXCERPT

I suck in a breath. His back sports a new tattoo. An orange tree runs from his flank up to his shoulder. The roots branch out over his lower back and side. It’s so well drawn it looks as if the network of roots is grafted with his skin. A branch with orange blossoms runs up to his shoulder. The petals curl over the arch, only the tips of a flower visible on the curve as he faces me again.
Why did he get it? The answer is obvious. The truth stares me in the face. He never said it, but he declared it in permanent ink on his skin next to the values that govern his behavior, his life.
“It’s not some kind of gravestone,” he says in a quiet voice.
My gaze slips to the pendant on the leather string that hangs in the center of his breastbone. “What’s not a gravestone?” I ask, pretending not to know what he’s talking about. It’s too deep, too personal. We don’t share that kind of intimacy any longer.
“The tattoo. It doesn’t symbolize grief.”
I can’t help from asking, “What does it symbolize?”
“Love.” His gaze intensifies. “The kind that gets under your skin.”

AUTHOR BIO

Charmaine Pauls was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She obtained a degree in Communication at the University of Potchestroom, and followed a diverse career path in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications, photography, graphic design, and brand marketing. Her writing has always been an integral part of her professions.

After relocating to Chile with her French husband, she fulfilled her passion to write creatively full-time. Charmaine has published over twenty novels since 2011, as well as several short stories and articles. Two of her shorts have been selected by the International Literary Society for an anthology from across the African continent.

When she is not writing, she likes to travel, read, and rescue cats. Charmaine currently lives in France with her husband and children. Their household is a linguistic mélange of Afrikaans, English, French and Spanish.

My Review

Book three starts a year after the traumatic and cliffhanger ending of book two.

Reading this series in order is a must, it’s a trilogy and both book one and two end on cliffhangers, so reading out of order is probably my going to confuse you no end!

It also has triggers, so check out the warning before purchasing.

Cas spent a long time crying and nursing a broken heart and body! But no more! Now it’s time to plot and scheme, and bring down the man who tried to kill her!!

Ian can’t face being anywhere that holds memories of happier times! Working and drinking is the only thing that keeps him from total destruction! Moments play on a never ending loop, betrayal fights with grief! He wishes he could go back in time…..

Trying not to give too much away in this book is hard. You just want to tell everyone what goes on, you want to explain in detail all the sadness and hurt that seeps out from the pages. Ian and Cas seemed to have it all, they were working towards their HEA, but misunderstandings and lies tore their world apart. So how can they ever be together again?

To be honest, I didn’t think Ian deserved another chance. I would have let him hurt forever, he was cruel and unforgiving. The things he did and said in book two shouldn’t have given him a second chance with Cas. And I think Cas let him off too quick, but that’s just my opinion.

There is also the matter of a detective that doggedly tracks them down and ruthlessly pursuing them, until you know there will be either a gun fight or a bloody fight to the death!

I liked how the village sided with Cas over Ian (even though he pays their wages and is good to them) showing him their displeasure at his handling of her. I liked that we got to see both of his siblings in this book (Damien was just great) and I’m hoping Leon can redeem himself if he ever gets a story. And I thought the feat Cas handled herself in the year away from Ian was needed. Although I had hoped she would have at least gotten a shot at him! 😝

There were a few scenes that will stay with you for a while……. There are a few moments that will have you smiling….
Did it end the way I wanted? No! But that’s just my view. But the way it ends, is a HEA for this couple.

I’ve really enjoyed reading this trilogy. And I’m adding this author to my reading list.

If your looking for an alpha male who takes what he wants with no apologies, then Ian is your guy. If you want a sweet romance with little angst, then this book/series won’t be for you.

Grab the series, you won’t be disappointed.
